W Chicago Lakeshore

W CHICAGO LAKESHORE
644 N Lake Shore Drive · Chicago, IL 60611-3017

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of staying at the newly remodeled W Chicago Lakeshore during a quick trip for meetings with The Everygirl editorial team. I snapped a few photos during my visit, so I thought it would be fun to show you a peek inside in case you’re ever in Chicago and looking for somewhere to stay.

From the outside this downtown Chicago hotel is totally unassuming, but wow, when you walk inside! It’s definitely a W with a sleek, sexy vibe thanks to their recent redesign. The lobby has a hip, urban feel and was continuously filled with guests socializing in and around the hotel’s new restaurant, CURRENT–which we ate at one night so I can definitely vouch for the food being delicious. Our floor had stunning views over Lake Michigan and Chicago’s landmark Navy Pier, but really my favorite part was the room I shared with my friend and fellow editor Juley. While I typically swoon over hotel rooms that are light and airy, it’s really hard not to like a space decked out in classic black and white for a modern edge. From our city view windows, light bounced off the crisp white sheets and emphasized the high-contrast décor, while a glass ball chandelier and chartreuse chair added just-right touches of interest. Bath products—always important, yes?—were all Bliss and there was also a full Bliss Spa in the hotel. A great place to consider for overnights in the Windy City.

Disclaimer: The W Chicago Lakeshore kindly covered my stay, but all opinions are my own.

Children’s Books

I have a distinct childhood memory around reading. My parents instilled a deep love of books in us at an early age, from reading favorites like Goodnight Moon to us when we were young to reading The Chronicles of Narnia together as a family while folding laundry when we got older. This influence turned me into a bookworm for some years, where I devoured classic titles like Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights and finished all the books on my school reading lists before anyone else. As an adult, I honestly don’t read nearly as much as I would like, but I’m especially looking forward to reviving that love of reading as we raise our daughter. With that in mind, I’m starting to collect our own childhood favorites for her nursery’s bookshelves and looking for other great books I may not know about to include.

Since many of you sweetly responded to my request for book recos over the weekend on Instagram (loved all your great suggestions!), I thought I’d bring that ask here to the blog, too. I’d LOVE if anyone reading this post could take just a few seconds to comment below with your favorite childhood book(s)…then I’ll put together a comprehensive post rounding up the best and share–which I hope will be a great resource whether you’re a mom, mom-to-be, or simply to bookmark for one day!

Flank Steak with Chimichurri Sauce

A month ago, my doctors instructed me to start taking an iron supplement and to eat more red meat because of low red blood cell count (anemia). Being a big chicken, fish and veggie eater, I figured upping my red meat intake was going to be quite hard. But thank goodness it’s summer and grilling season, which has made the shift to incorporating more meat into my weekly diet pretty easy. Besides choosing hanger steak over my usual choice of fish at restaurants, at home we’ve been favoring lean steak cuts like flank or skirt, which are affordable and cook very quickly on the grill. To kick up our steak routine a notch, I’ve been making good use of the abundant herbs in my garden, whipping together this colorful chimichurri sauce. Originally from Argentina and made of finely-chopped parsley, garlic and tangy vinegar, I threw some cilantro in my chimichurri mix too this weekend. Steak with chimichurri–it really is the perfect summer pair.

Flank Steak with Chimichurri Sauce

1 flank, skirt, or hanger steak
Extra-virgin olive oil
Apple cider vinegar
Coarse salt
Freshly ground pepper
Garlic powder
Paprika

For the sauce:

1 cup lightly packed flat-leaf parsley and cilantro leaves
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
1/2 teaspoon red chili pepper flakes
1 tablespoon shallot
3/4 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons sherry wine vinegar (or red wine vinegar)
3 tablespoons lemon juice

Place the steak in a large Ziploc bag and add the marinade ingredients (no measurements, just a bit of each). Seal the bag and shake to cover the meat. Refrigerate and marinate four hours to overnight. Before cooking, remove the steak from the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature for 30 minutes. For the chimichurri, place all ingredients in a small food processor or blender and pulse until well chopped, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Drain excess liquid and reserve. Set the steak on a hot grill and cook for about 5 minutes on the first side. Flip the steak and cook another 5 minutes or so, or until desired doneness. Once cooked, lay the steak on a cutting board and allow to rest for 5 minutes before slicing (across the grain into strips). Top the steak with the chimichurri sauce or serve it on the side.

4-Minute Facial

Pregnancy has had some clear perks–a glowing complexion, lush locks, fast-growing nails. But it also has a drying effect on your skin…couple that with already dry skin, and I’m in need of extra, extra moisture. I couldn’t wait to get to Sundara for that facial I mentioned yesterday (don’t forget to enter to win the spa getaway) and give my face some much-needed TLC. After an hour of “Advanced Resurfacing,” I walked out feeling like myself again. Not to mention, my skin was baby soft.

But like massages, I get facials very rarely. It’s one of my favorite indulgences, and every time I do, I question why I don’t go more often. But I mean, who has the money and the time? I see it as a treat. So when the Sundara team sent me home with the very products they use from HydroPeptide to recreate my own spa experience at home, I was elated. The next week when I was feeling kind of mehh one morning, I used the Polish & Plump Peel combo and instantly felt better. Unlike many masks and facial products I’ve tried, this one doesn’t require you to sit around for 10-30 minutes while it works its magic. It takes just four minutes. That’s it. Microdermabrasion with zero downtime; talk about an instant refresh. And it’s a total secret weapon–your skin is smooth and glowy after those four little minutes. I’ve been using it once a week.

Every morning, I’ve also been using the Power Serum and ultra-rich Power Lift moisturizer. Now I start my day with well-moisturized and illuminated skin. And since my beauty philosophy is based on good skincare over lots of makeup, it helps me quickly throw on the little makeup I do wear and get on with my day. Happy to have these in my daily skincare arsenal.

What are your go-to products when your skin needs a little extra love?

A Day at Sundara + a Big Giveaway!

You know I love a great hotel and good skincare, so it was a total no-brainer for me to say yes when one of the top destination spas in the world, Sundara Inn & Spa, and skincare line HydroPeptide asked me to pay them a visit. Not only that, but they asked me to help them give away a spa getaway to one of my readers! Are you dying? More on that in a minute, but first, a little bit about my day at Sundara.

Sundara, which is Sanskrit for beautiful, describes the resort perfectly–hidden away among pine trees about an hour north of Madison, Wisconsin, it is truly a luxurious escape from it all. Who would’ve thought a spa that’s been rated a top 10 destination spa in the world by Travel + Leisure magazine and as the #3 favorite spa escape in America by ABC’s Good Morning America would be located here? The resort has just 26 rooms, which are large yet cozy, with features like fireplaces, spa bathrooms, and woodland views. Downstairs the spa and pool area provide a peaceful sanctuary where cell phones are off limits and relaxing is mandatory. On my visit, I was treated to an Advanced Resurfacing treatment and then spent the afternoon enjoying the Purifying Bath Ritual, lounging in the Tranquility Garden, and sipping smoothies by the infinity pool. TOTAL BLISS. It was perfect to experience solo, but would be even better for two–couples, girlfriends, even a babymoon. And it’s so accessible from Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago and other parts of the Midwest. Apparently people travel here from all over the country, and I can see why.

My HydroPeptide facial was amazing–the best pampering my skin has ever received–and the team sent me home with a home-care regimen that I’ve been using and loving for the past few weeks. I love that their products are gentle but nourishing with a scientific blend of anti-aging ingredients. In particular the two-step peel–just $78–has been a champ at scrubbing away dullness and instantly illuminating my skin. And the ultra-rich moisturizer quenches my dry skin like no other. Good news: the HydroPeptide products aren’t exclusive to spas…you can get them online at NordstromSpa.com or directly from HydroPeptide.com.

So, now the fun part! To help you rejuvenate and relax, Sundara is offering Perpetually Chic readers the chance to win a getaway to Sundara Inn & Spa. Yep, that’s right–enjoy the same experience I did:

  • A one-night stay for two in an Exclusive suite with king featherbed, fireplace and spa bathroom
  • Unlimited access to the indoor bathhouse with Purifying Bath Ritual and Relaxation Lounge and the outdoor infinity pool
  • Spa breakfast buffet
  • $200 in spa credit to use toward the treatments of your choice

The Perfect Dress

The Dress: Equipment dress

It’s been four months since I’ve shared a wardrobe essential, but for good reason. Pregnancy doesn’t present the ideal time to invest in wardrobe staples. I’ve mostly been leaning on affordable dresses from H&M to date and lots of leggings, but really got the bug to kick up my pregnancy style a notch in the last week or so. And gosh, I’m glad I did because this one is so good.

Over time, I’ve developed more of an instinct for perfect wardrobe pieces. To the point that more often than not, as of late anyway, I can spot one immediately. Part of it is figuring out your personal style and sticking with it, part of it is figuring out your body, and part of it is being willing to invest when you know you will wear the heck out of something. Or stalk pieces on your wishlist until they go on sale. And so my love affair with this dress started when I spotted it and ordered it with little hesitation. It just arrived last week, and I’m already on my second wearing of it today at work. I’ve already thought of a million ways to pair it with this shoe or that one and how to pair it for work, for night, for weekend. This dress is a closet workhorse if I’ve ever seen one, in simple yet luxurious washed silk. And it’s the kind of dress you know you’re going to feel great in no matter the day–call it your back-up-plan if you will. Best part? It fits me now while 30 weeks pregnant (so comfortable!) and will fit me even better post pregnancy. Perhaps I’m being naive to think I can still wear my favorite material–silk–as a new mother, but I like to think that the effortlessness of pieces like this are exactly what I’ll need more than ever.

WEEKEND: Equipment dress | K. Jacques sandals | A.P.C. bucket bag

WORK: Equipment dress | Joe’s Jeans heels | J. Crew denim jacket | A.P.C. bucket bag

NIGHT: Equipment dress | Aquazzura sandals | Accessory Concierge earrings (c/0) | vintage clutch

Summer Squash Noodles with Tomatoes & Zucchini Blossoms

I love how our local farmers’ market becomes more abundant with a variety of fruits and vegetables as we get into the throes of summer and head into fall. It’s the very best time of year to stock up on seasonal favorites like squashes–zucchini, yellow squash, pattypans, and even zucchini blossoms. Squash noodles are an excellent substitute when you’re craving the texture of pasta but wanting something crisp and light for a summer meal. A light herb-yogurt dressing adds a touch of creaminess and sweet cherry tomatoes, blossom shreds, toasted pine nuts and a dusting of freshly grated Parmesan complete the meal. Eat it alone or alongside grilled chicken or fish.

Summer Squash Noodles with Tomatoes, Zucchini Blossoms & Pine Nuts

2 zucchini
2 yellow squash
6-10 zucchini blossoms, cut into strands (if available)
1 cup of cherry tomatoes, halved
2 tablespoons of pine nuts, toasted
Fresh Parmesan to serve
Salt and pepper to taste

For the dressing:
1/2 cup Greek yogurt
1 tablespoon champagne vinegar
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 small garlic clove, minced
3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
Salt and pepper to taste

To make the dressing, add the yogurt, vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and herbs to a mini food processor. Blend until well combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Trim the ends off the zucchini and yellow squashes. Using a mandoline with the julienne blade or a julienne peeler, cut the zucchini and squashes into spaghetti-like strands. Transfer the zucchini and squashes to a large colander. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of salt and let sit for 20 minutes to drain the excess liquid from the squashes. Gently press the squash with paper towels to dry and transfer to a serving bowl. Toss with the dressing, then add tomatoes. Gently fold in zucchini blossoms. Top with toasted pine nuts and Parmesan. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve immediately.
